He was born Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero on April 15, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, United States. He is the oldest child of Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia López-Cepero, who later on along with him moved to Orlando, Florida.

He has two younger siblings such as Jean Rodríguez (a singer) and Tatiana Rodríguez, though Fonsi’s inspiration come from the stars of the popular group Menudo, and the San Juan Children’s Choir.
