Career
Richie is the son of Lionel Brockman Richie Sr. and Alberta R. Foster who raised him on the campus of Tuskegee Institute. He completed his graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Joliet Township High School, East Campus, in Joliet, Illinois.
A star tennis player from Joliet offered him a tennis scholarship to attend Tuskegee Institute, which he happily accepted. Richie formed a succession of R&B groups in the mid-1960s during his high school days in Tuskegee.
Richie worked as a singer and saxophonist with the Commodores, an American funk and soul band, in 1968. Same year, the group signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records for one record before moving on to Motown Records at first as a support act to The Jackson 5. The band after that turned out to be established as a well-liked soul group.
Richie made his solo career with album ‘Lionel Richie’ in 1982, enclosed three hit singles: the U.S. number-one song “Truly”, “You Are” and “My Love”. He continued the style of his ballads with the Commodores. He started his career as one of the most successful balladeers of the 1980s.
His album hit No. 3 on the music charts and sold more than 4 million copies. His next follow-up album “Can’t Slow Down,” was released in 1983 which sold more than twice as many copies.
By considering his entire career, Richie has sold over 90 million records all over the globe that made him one of the best-selling artists of all time in the world. He received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for “Can’t Slow Down,” as well as his other Grammy Awards.
