David Jon Gilmour is an English musician who was born on 6 March 1946 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He is a member of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd of which he joined as guitarist and co-lead vocalist in 1968 shortly before the departure of founding member Syd Barrett.
Along with Gilmour, Pink Floyd attained global success with the concept albums like The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. The group also became one of the best-selling in the early 1980s and achieved notable acclaim in music history.
This musical band had sold more than 250 million records worldwide by 2012, as well as 75 million units sold in the United States. After Roger Waters’ quit in 1985, under the Gilmour’s leadership, Pink Floyd released three more studio albums.
